Although the local soils are relatively fertile, access to a reliable water supply has been a principle constraint and water was collected from ponds in a marshy area, approximately 2k from the village. This is of poor quality with high sedimentation but was the only water available for cooking, drinking, washing and irrigation. There are frequent health problems associated with this polluted water.
A grant from Wilmslow Wells, Kitchen Table Charities Trust, Alchemy Foundation and Wales Africa Community Links, enabled the charity to drill a borehole and to have two storage tanks installed. One tank is for irrigation on the farm and the other for the village water supply.
These are the solar panels of which we had 12. A fence surrounding the tank and panels have been made it look tidy as well as being secure. Plants are now growing around the fence. It was a very exciting moment for everyone when the taps were turned on. There is already a marked difference in certain health issues, thanks to safe clean water.
